What does “RFID” stand for? Technology:
RFID means Radio Frequency Identification. It is an automatic identification technology, which is used for the contactless identification of articles, goods, persons, animals etc. in process control, tracing of goods or goods stream, admission control, or many further fields of application.

The transponders used here work depending on the required range either in the ultra-high, high or low frequency ranges and exchange data contactless with a write/read system. Depending upon the necessary range, these transponders work either without their own power supply (passive systems) or with their own power supply (active systems). By the miniaturization of the necessary electronic construction units it is possible today to integrate such transponders into a label (self-adhesive, paper, cardboard or plastic).

For practical purposes it is important that the data does not have to be optically recognised (scanner, handset scanner etc.), but instead by means of electromagnetic waves conveyed to a write/read system. This all happens in a fraction of a second. A further advantage in the comparison to the bar code technology is the possibility of changing, deleting or supplementing the data during its life span. A transponder within the standard range permits the storage of 256 bits up to 10 kbit data.

Likewise the transponder permits batch collection, meaning several labels can be read at the same time, without any collision of data.

Transponders therefore are ideal for the marking, coding, identifying, protecting and authenticating of raw materials and goods.
